Pet Dermatophytosis Rapid Test
The Pet Dermatophytosis Rapid Test detects α-1,6-mannan, a cell-wall antigen of dermatophyte fungi, in swabs taken from skin lesions of dogs and cats. It is a latex immunochromatographic cassette and an aid to the diagnosis of ringworm (dermatophytosis), read by eye in 15 minutes.
Swab the edge of a scaly, crusted, red or hairless lesion, release the sample into the pre-filled buffer tube and add three drops to the cassette. Supplied in kits of 2, 5, 10, 20 or 25 tests, transported, stored and used at room temperature. For veterinary use only.

Procedure
- 01Open the sample tubeTake a sample collecting tube pre-filled with dilution buffer and tear off the aluminium foil seal.
- 02Swab the lesionDip a flocked plastic-rod swab in the buffer, shake off the excess so it is moist but not dripping, and wipe the edge of the lesion at least 20 times.
- 03Collect the swabPlace the swab in the sample collecting tube.
- 04Release the sampleTurn and squeeze the swab against the inner wall of the tube 15 times, for about 30 seconds.
- 05Cap the tubeDiscard the swab and fit the drip tip on the sample tube.
- 06Add three dropsTake the cassette out of its sealed pouch and add 3 drops to the round sample well.
- 07Read at 15 minutesControl line (C) plus test line (T): positive. Control line only: negative. No control line: invalid, repeat with a new cassette.

What does the dermatophytosis rapid test detect?
α-1,6-mannan, a polysaccharide in the cell wall of dermatophyte fungi, collected from the lesion surface with a swab. A positive result supports a diagnosis of ringworm; fungal culture or PCR can identify the species where that is needed.
How does it compare with a Wood’s lamp?
A Wood’s lamp depends on fluorescence that many dermatophyte infections do not show, so it has limited sensitivity and a high false-negative rate. The rapid test looks for fungal antigen directly on the lesion instead.
Which animals and samples can be tested?
Dogs and cats, using a body-surface swab taken from the edge of the lesion. The kit is for veterinarians and pet hospitals only.
How is this rapid test stored and how long does it keep?
At room temperature, 2 to 30 °C, away from direct sunlight. Shelf life is 18 to 24 months from manufacture; each pouch carries the expiry date and the lot number.
